Growing Your Own Cannabis With Weed Seeds

Can you grow cannabis in New Zealand with weed seeds?

People prefer to grow their own cannabis for many reasons. It provides them with sufficient cannabis, and they no longer have to depend on others. Moreover, they can control the quality of the plant and some even adopt it as a new, fun hobby.

Nearly 12% of people in New Zealand used cannabis in the last year. By the age of 21, about 80% of New Zealanders have tried the drug at least once, while 10% are heavy users.

Because of this, the demand for the drug is strong, and many hope this translates in to support for legalisation in next year’s referendum. Such a scenario could mean Kiwis will also be allowed to grow their own cannabis.

Who grows their own weed from seeds?

Industrial hemp can be grown for non-therapeutic purposes. Industrial hemp growers who supply product for purposes that are only allowed by the Misuse of Drugs (Industrial Hemp) Regulations 2006 should comply with those Regulations. Industrial hemp products of these plants, cultivated pursuant to a license issued in accordance with these Regulations, cannot be supplied to any person for therapeutic use.

Cannabis can be grown or produced for scientific research also. For example, cannabis can be grown for reasons that include testing cannabinoid levels under different cultivation conditions, in-vitro research on cannabis products, and testing various methods of cannabis extraction.

In this scenario, licensees are required to deal with controlled drugs, to import controlled drugs if you are importing products, and to cultivate a prohibited plant if you are growing yourself.

Cost of growing weed

The cost of growing and maintaining cannabis indoors is much more expensive than outdoors. With indoor cannabis cultivation, grow lights and systems for temperature and humidity control are important. Compare that to outdoor grows that use sunlight and don’t require any tools for controlling the natural environment in which they bloom.

On the other hand, the controlled environment of an indoor grow enables cultivators to produce higher quality plants than those grown outdoor. Cannabis cultivated indoors is sold at a higher price due to its excellent quality. Growers can cultivate throughout the year, producing several crops rather than a single crop that depends on the seasons.

Moreover, the professional cultivation of cannabis is much different than growing plants in your room. For professional cultivation, you need warehouse-size space.

New Zealanders are going to vote in a referendum on legalizing the personal use of cannabis. The referendum will hold during the 2020 general election, and as part of the confidence and supply agreement between the Greens and Labour parties. This could also affect the cost of cannabis cultivation at various stages.

Is it legal to grow and sell your own weed in New Zealand?

Cannabis plants fall under Class C controlled drugs under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1975, while cannabis preparations fall under the Class B1 controlled drugs. When cultivating and producing cannabis for medicinal use, both high THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) and low THC cannabis fall under the same classification in the Misuse of Drugs Act.

As of now, licenses for cannabis can only be granted under the Misuse of Drugs Act for cultivation and extraction of the drug for medical or scientific research, including clinical trials. Growing the plant for other purposes, including commercial cultivation, is still prohibited.

A grower of cannabis and hemp who wants to supply a processor or manufacturer with the plant to produce a cannabis-product for clinical trials requires a license to cultivate it. They need an information/license number for the business or individual being supplied. The grower may only supply to a licensed person and only supply licensees mentioned in the license.

Final words

Growing your own cannabis is becoming very popular and demanding in New Zealand. If the 2020 referendum gains support in its favor, the lawmakers may become lenient with the laws. However, before you start growing your own cannabis, make sure you make yourself familiar with everything that is required for indoor and outdoor cannabis for commercial or personal use, especially weed seeds.
